Guided Wave Radar for Level Measurement
Guided Wave Radar technology powered by Micropower Impulse Radar combines time domain reflectometry, equivalent time sampling, and innovative low-power circuitry to create a high-speed, highly accurate level measurement solution. By transmitting electromagnetic pulses through a waveguide, this focused approach delivers superior efficiency and reliability compared to non-contact radar systems, helping industries achieve safer, more precise operations.
Time domain reflectometry (TDR)
Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) is a powerful technology that uses pulses of electromagnetic (EM) energy to measure distances or levels with exceptional accuracy. When these pulses encounter a dielectric discontinuity—such as the surface of a process medium—part of the pulse is reflected back, and the difference in dielectric between air and the medium determines the amplitude of the reflection. Although TDR is a
relatively new approach in industrial level measurement, it has been a proven, reliable method in telephone, computer, and power transmission applications for years, where it effectively detects cable breaks and shorts.
We harness TDR technology in our Eclipse™ Guided Wave Radar (GWR) transmitters to deliver precise, dependable level measurement across a wide range of industrial processes. By using a specialized waveguide with a known characteristic impedance in air, the Eclipse™ probe quickly detects impedance changes when immersed in materials with higher dielectric constants, producing clear, accurate reflections. This cutting-edge implementation of TDR ensures safer operations, improved process control, and heightened efficiency, making our Eclipse™ GWR transmitters a trusted solution for critical level measurement applications.
